The Birchmere is a concert hall in Alexandria, Virginia. This historic venue has been around the Washington DC area since 1966.

High ticket prices stopped me from going in the past, but I found a concert in my price range. For $40, I bought a ticket to see 10,000 Maniacs.

You might vaguely remember the 10,000 Maniacs. Let me refresh your memory. Side note: BRING BACK UNPLUGGED, MTV.

I’m not familiar with their entire body of work — only their hits — but they have a lot of good songs.

So there I was, on a Friday evening by myself going to see 10,000 Maniacs.

The venue’s exterior featured a bunch of cool murals, but the inside was super weird. It was like an indoor picnic, something I’ve never experienced at a concert venue. From these seats, concert goers watch the stage. So, you will notice that half of the seats don’t even face the stage. Also, you can order full meals and drinks at these tables. Maybe it’s just me, but I found that to be strange for a concert venue.

Despite finding it weird, I still ordered food. I ate a Caesar salad while watching 10,000 Maniacs jam away.

I decided to get a seat in the way back and pray nobody would sit with me. Luckily, nobody was lonely enough to sit at my table of four that was occupied by one.

I hope to be back to enjoy another hootenanny.
