I found this fantastic pottery studio in Adams Morgan in D.C. – Hinkley Pottery – that offers an opportunity to take a “Try It” class, which is exactly what it sounds like. No need to buy supplies. No need to sign up for the next two months. It’s a two and half hour class perfect for people like me who have never done pottery and don’t want to commit to something longterm… at least without having tried it first.
Once I got to the studio, I was greeted by my instructor who first gave me a tour of the studio. We then picked up the supplies I would need and got started. Within a half an hour, I was on the wheel throwing and pinching (pottery jargon, guys). I think I was the only Try It student, so I got a lot of one-on-one instructor time, which was wonderful.
So, fast forward two hours, I had three bowls to show for and lots of wet clay all over me. All in all, I enjoyed myself. Also I must make mention of how sexual I found the process. I’m either a big weirdo or I’ve seen that scene from Ghost one too many times.
PS don’t wear anything you don’t mind getting dirty.
